Pagan Prejudice

Be true to your inner self
Be true to your inner self

As Pagans we come across many prejudices in life, mostly from those outside of our community (I’m sure we’ve all heard the “you’re going to hell” spiel at least once). There is one prejudice, however, that often crops up from within our own ranks – the belief that it is not possible to live a truly spiritual life if you swear, have negative thoughts or bad days.

Love and light all the time is not for everyone.

While some of us may be suited to a life of nothing but love, light and bubbles, some of us are not. And it’s time we accepted that it’s perfectly ok. Trying to bottle up this earthy side of your soul to create the appearance of a perpetually happy soul is bad for you, not just spiritually, but physically and emotionally as well. There is plenty to be gained by embracing and integrating your shadow side.

Be true to your inner self.

The beauty of the many pathways that fall under the pagan umbrella is the freedom to choose which elements call to us. Don’t try and fit yourself into someone else’s mould of what a pagan life should look like. Create your own mould to suit the aspects of your personality that you bear proudly. If swearing helps you express who you are as a person then by all means…swear!

Being realistic.

One pagan’s negative view is another’s realistic one. The difference between the two seems to be somewhat subjective. If you feel that you are being a realist as opposed to a negative nelly then hold your head high and continue to call a spade a spade.

Pagans learn from good and bad experiences
Embrace your bad days

Everyone has bad days.

It is a fact of life and nature herself that not every thing will be sunny and rosy every day of your life. Embracing your bad days can help you be a more centred and grounded person. Let’s face it, sh*t is part of nature and you don’t see her trying to disguise it as anything other than what it really is. And, as it is with nature, a bit of manure every now and then is good for your growth.

Don’t live your life like a fish up a tree simply because a bird told you it was the only way to live. Embrace your earthy pagan soul. And the next time a driver cuts you off don’t feel ashamed if your first instinct is to give them the middle finger salute. Embrace it, express it, and move on!
