Moonstone
Moonstone has been one of my favourite gemstones for as long as I can remember. I have always felt drawn to it, and often will keep a moonstone pendant or stone on me throughout the day. It’s not only a beautiful and varied stone, but an incredibly versatile one. In ancient history, the Romans believed moonstone was the solidified shards of moonlight itself and both the Romans and the Greeks associated moonstone with their respective lunar deities. It was popularly worn fixed within the jewellery of the Art Nouveau period and is the Florida State gemstone, designated in honour of the Moon Landings.
As one of the alternative birthstones for June, the moonstone is associated with Cancer, Libra and Scorpio. It is also associated with lunar and feminine energies and is representative of the Goddess. On a full moon, meditate on the things that weigh you down while holding a moonstone in your hand. When the heat of your body has warmed the moonstone, blow over it and whisper aloud to the Goddess to take the worries from your heart. Place the moonstone under the light of the full moon to cleanse and cool, drawing the unwanted energies away.
With its distinctive opalescent luster, it’s easy to understand why the moonstone is so compelling. Changing continuously under differing qualities and angles of light, it is also rich with magickal properties and associations. As a stone associated with water, moonstone is good for aiding in flow and liquidity, easing stress and anxiety, enhancing physical and mental flexibility and restoring balance. Moonstone can also aid with the female cycle, regulating menstruation and alleviating associated pain. When placed beneath a pillow, moonstone can also ease the symptoms of insomnia.
Moonstone is known for its ability to enhance psychic perception – guiding the user in interpreting the surrounding vibrations. I find this particularly useful for automatic art and writing, in which the moonstone funnels the surrounding vibrations into your hand to create visual or written artworks.
Moonstone is often known as the stone of the traveler, bringing good fortune and safety to the carrier. It also stimulates new beginnings and hope. Gifting a moonstone to a traveler ensures that they will stay connected with you despite the distance. Creating a circle of moonstones and placing a photo or belonging of a loved one will send them peace and ease anxiety and emotional unrest.
The moonstone’s ancient association with the moon and Goddess, powerful balancing, protection and psychic enhancing properties make it not only a beautiful stone but a powerful one. Keeping a moonstone with you, either worn or kept in a pocket or handbag will lend you strong emotional clarity and calm, plus, gazing upon it’s endless combinations of opalescence is a lovely sight to behold in itself!
